It strikes me that the book is Michneresque in scope and approach. Anyone who already knows some of our regional or local history will quickly place the story on a map and follow the progression through a difficult period of history into the modern era. The author's use of real family names, place names and actual events creates a world in which the fictional characters can easily be transposed to the parallel histories of many local families. The reader will appreciate the authenticity of the author's approach and will identify with the stress of multiple cultures converging in time and place with dynamic results. The reader who has lived in this region of the Gulf Coast will quickly begin to identify with the characters and will visualize the landscape and the times. It is a quick read. I made a mistake of reading over two weeks and had to re-read some of the early events as I neared the end to refresh the character's experience. After reading this - I am hopeful that one day - there will be sequels and I can imagine a ten part TV mini-series dramatization of the basic story. I throughly enjoyed this book because it was centered around local areas where I was raised. I could imagine the problems with whites, blacks, and Indians trying to live among each other in earlier times after the Civil War. Although this is a book of fiction, it certainly was a mirror of our history.
Even if you are not familiar with the historical context of Santa Rosa County in Northwest Florida this book will have you bound up within the pages wanting to read the sequel when you reach the end.
